Meet The Students

Alex 2019

Alex Yang

  • My name is Alex Yang.

  • I am in eighth grade.

  • In my spare time, I produce music, hang out with friends, play video games, and edit videos.

  • My hobbies are producing music, playing video games, and video editing.

  • I love everything about music; it is so diverse and beautiful. So many instruments can be used to produce music, and so many different chords and tunes can be played.

  • I allocate around an hour for practicing piano every day, and if I am unable to, I try to catch up on the weekends.

  • I do not face too many challenges. Occasionally I will have a lot of homework to do and piano lessons will interfere with that, but usually the impact is small.

  • I enjoy playing modern music the most, but it is fun to play the other kinds as well.

  • I have various motivations to learn piano. I love music generally, and piano has taught me a great deal of creating music.

  • I have learned almost everything I know about music from my teacher. She taught me the fundamentals, and advanced into music theory. using emotion, and many of the diverse aspects of piano.

Grace Wang

Grace Wang

  •  My name is Grace Wang.

  •  I am in 8th grade

  •  I like to read, play video games, draw and spend  time with my friends and family in my spare time.

  •  Some of my hobbies include basketball, piano,   flute, and art.

  • What I like about music is how relaxing it is to play. It is amazing how I can make beautiful sounds from tapping a few keys on the piano. Depending on the song, I can feel a multitude of emotions, which relieves my stress from school. When I play piano, the demanding homework, tests, family, and basketball melts away from me, and I am left with the piano song and me, which gives me a fresh outlook on everything when I finish practicing piano.

  • Some tips to manage school and piano is that I know when to give myself breaks. I give myself reminders not to procrastinate, and I study in 30 minute chunks before taking a 5 minute break. That way, I can focus better and have something to look forward to. I don't want to make my whole life study, study, study, so I routinely let myself take breaks to check social media or watch YouTube.

  • Some challenges that I have are that I sometimes get off task, like I start binge watching TV shows, which is very hard to stop watching, and I end up feeling that I don't have enough time to do anything, even though I was the one who caused that. Other times, I forget about my theory homework, so I have to rush to finish my homework on the day of my piano lesson, which can end up being very stressful and annoying.

  • I manage my time by setting up a specific schedule to practice my instrument, and I try my best to follow my schedule.

  •  My motivation to learn is that my friends all play piano and I will have both a passion and something to put on my college application. When I really don't want to play piano, I think of how beneficial piano will be in the future.

  • My piano teacher  taught me the basics of piano, such as theory, dynamics, technical skills and scales, which improved my piano skills. My piano teacher also taught me to be patient, since I rarely get one skill the first time. With patience, I can master more difficult skills without giving up on myself.

Joanne Tai

  • My name is Joanne Tai.

  • In my spare time, I like to play video games with my friends and draw.

  • My hobbies include playing games, drawing, and playing the saxophone.

  • What I like about music is how versatile it is. A single song can be arranged to have an entirely different mood to it while instruments can be interchanged to create another feeling. It would still be the same song, but there would just be a unique, indescribable feel to it.

  • My favorite songs have been 1st Arabesque, Clair de Lune, and the first movement of Beethoven’s Pathetique Sonata.

  • I get my homework done as soon as I get home and practice piano afterward.

  • There haven’t been many challenges for me, but sometimes I have to study for a big test and can’t afford the time to practice, so I leave it for the next day.

  • The best part of my music lessons is discovering new songs to play.

  • I get motivated by watching some YouTube videos about child prodigies and professional pianists and wishing I could be like them.

  • I don’t have any plans for the future as of now, but maybe with the knowledge I have about music, I can somehow incorporate it into my career when I grow up.
